Rescue

" A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed."

In most cases, rescue may be the last option for a dog in a shelter or in an inappropriate situation. As a rescuer taking in only a very few dogs at any given time, I can evaluate, train and place a dog accordingly. I will also assist an individual in re-homing their dog to a more suitable environment.

To My Foster Mom
There I sat, alone and afraid,
You got a call and came right to my aid.
You bundled me up with blankets and love.
And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.
I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold.
That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold.
You taught me what love is, you helped me to mend.
You loved me and healed me and became my first friend.
And just when I thought you'd done all you do,
There came along not one new lesson, but two.
First you said, "Sweetheart, you're ready to go.
I've done all I can, and you've learned all I know."
Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss.
Along came a new family, they even have kids!
They took me to their home, forever to stay.
At first I thought you sent me away.
Then that second lesson became perfectly clear.
No matter how far, you will always be near.
And so, Foster Mom, you know I've moved on.
I have a new home, with toys and a lawn.
But I'll never forget what I learned that first day.
You never really give your fosters away.
You gave me these thoughts to remember you by.
We may never meet again, and now I know why.
You'll remember I lived with you for a time.
I may not be yours, but you'll always be mine.

As any rescuer would attest, the process is bittersweet. It is difficult to communicate to a dog that the dog will be fine with a new family. We as rescuers can only try our best in assisting the dog in dealing with what we hope will be the last transfer they will ever have to make. As a group, we must keep in perspective that if we cannot let go, we would have difficulty helping so many others. A person who adopts, a person who is willing to make the effort no matter what the task to build a successful relationship with their dog is a person rescuers prize and consider an equal.

The rescue process, no matter that it is bittersweet, has introduced me to so many amazing people that I am honored to call friends. My hope is that all of the dogs, once they leave my residence, know that with them they carry a piece of my heart, forever. I am thankful, for all of these experiences, they have been enriching parts of my life. It is my "gift", my "desire", and I will follow through as long as I am able.
